English Language Requirements for Skilled Residence Visas in NZ
Learn about the English language standards for Skilled Residence visa applicants in New Zealand, including accepted tests, score requirements, and alternative qualification options.
Kia ora everyone,
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has set clear English language requirements for principal applicants under various Skilled Residence visa categories. As your trusted immigration advisors at Surani Associates, we want to break down these requirements to help you understand what's needed for your application.
Visa Categories Affected:
Skilled Residence: Straight to Residence
Work to Residence
Highly Skilled
Care Workforce and Transport Sector Work to Residence
Meeting the English Language Requirement:
English Language Tests: Applicants can provide results from approved English language tests, no more than two years old at the time of application. Accepted tests and minimum scores include:
IELTS (General or Academic): Overall score of 6.5 or more
TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 79 or more
PTE Academic: Overall score of 58 or more
B2 First or B2 First for Schools: Overall score of 176 or more
OET: Grade B or higher in all four skills
Alternative Evidence:
Citizenship of Canada, Ireland, UK, or USA, with at least five years of work or education in these countries, Australia, or NZ.
A qualification comparable to a NZ level 7 bachelor's degree from Australia, Canada, NZ, Ireland, UK, or USA, with at least two years of study in these countries.
A qualification comparable to a NZ level 8 or above qualification from the countries mentioned above, with at least one year of study.
Qualification Assessment: If using a qualification to meet the English requirement, applicants must provide an International Qualification Assessment from NZQA, unless:
The qualification is on the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment, or
The applicant has full or provisional NZ occupational registration involving qualification assessment.
Important Notes:
Immigration officers may require an English test result even if alternative evidence is provided.
Applications will be declined if the principal applicant doesn't meet the minimum English standard.
For the Care Workforce and Transport Sector Work to Residence category, not meeting the English requirement doesn't automatically lead to decline, but may affect the outcome.
