Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) – Resident Visa

Over the years, our team has successfully assisted thousands of clients in obtaining New Zealand residence through the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC).

The SMC is one of the main residence pathways for skilled migrants. However, it is a complex and highly regulated process, often underestimated by applicants. It’s important to understand the requirements clearly from the outset to avoid costly mistakes or delays.

What is the SMC Residence Visa?

The SMC Residence Visa is intended for individuals who have the skills, qualifications, and work experience needed in New Zealand to support its economy. For eligible applicants, this visa offers the chance to settle in New Zealand and create a better future for themselves and their families.

Key Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the SMC Residence Visa, applicants must meet several mandatory requirements, including:

  • Holding a job offer from, or currently working for, an accredited New Zealand employer

  • Being under the age of 56 at the time of application

  • Meeting health and character requirements

  • Providing evidence of English language proficiency

The Application Process

The process begins with submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) to Immigration New Zealand (INZ). Applicants who meet the required criteria will be invited to apply for residence.

Eligibility is assessed based on a points system, and applicants must score at least 6 points to be considered.

Why Professional Advice Matters

Given the time and financial investment involved, it is crucial to assess your eligibility correctly and plan your application strategy carefully. Our experienced immigration team can guide you through each stage of the process to ensure the best possible outcome.

The Points System

To be eligible under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC), you must secure at least 6 points, based on the following primary skill indicators:

  • New Zealand occupational registration

  • Recognised qualification (Bachelor’s degree or higher)

  • Job or job offer with income of at least 1.5 times the New Zealand median wage

Important: You can only claim points from one of these primary skill indicators. Points cannot be combined across multiple indicators (e.g., you cannot add points from your qualification to those from occupational registration).

Additional Points – New Zealand Work Experience

You may also claim 1 point for each year of skilled work experience in New Zealand, up to a maximum of 3 points.

These additional points can be combined with points from your primary skill indicator (occupational registration, qualification, or income) to reach the 6-point threshold.

Careful assessment is essential to ensure you are claiming points correctly. Our team can assist in determining the most effective way to structure your application.
