Maximum continuous stay and longer visa length for the AEWV
Kia ora everyone,
Immigration New Zealand has announced significant changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) scheme, effective from 27 November 2023. As your trusted immigration advisors at Surani Associates, we want to break down these changes and explain what they mean for you.
Key Changes:
Maximum Continuous Stay:
Introduces a 'maximum continuous stay' for all AEWV holders
5 years for those earning at least the median wage
Varies for sector-specific roles (see table below)
Extended Visa Lengths:
Increased from 3 to 5 years for those earning at least the median wage
Increased from 2 to 3 years for care workforce sector roles paid at level 3 or 4 rates
Time Outside NZ:
12 months required outside NZ after reaching maximum stay (for most roles)
4 months for meat and seafood processing roles paid below median wage
Important Notes:
Existing AEWV Holders:
Can apply for the balance of the new maximum visa length from 27 November
No new Job Check required if role and conditions remain the same
Calculating Continuous Stay:
Starts from the date of first AEWV or arrival in NZ on AEWV
Includes time on AEWVs approved before 27 November 2023
Pathways to Residence:
Exemption from 12-month offshore period if on a recognised pathway to residence

Level 3 pay rate increase allows time to complete level 4 qualification
Level 4 pay rate increase provides time to apply for residence after 2 years' work
