Important Update: Partner and Dependent Visas for AEWV Holders (ANZSCO Levels 4 & 5)
This blog post explains recent changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) scheme, specifically affecting partners and dependent children of AEWV holders in ANZSCO skill levels 4 and 5 without a residency pathway.
Effective from June 26, 2024:
AEWV holders (ANZSCO levels 4 & 5 with no residency pathway) can no longer sponsor partner or dependent child visa applications. This means that if you hold an AEWV as a qualified Carpenter (ANZSCO Skill Level 4) without a residency pathway, you can no longer sponsor your spouse or dependent children to join you in New Zealand under your visa.
Partners and dependents can still apply for visas independently (e.g., AEWV or student visa) if they meet the requirements. For instance, your spouse could apply for their own AEWV if they have qualifications and experience in a role on the AEWV list, or they could pursue an international student visa if they wish to study in New Zealand.
This change aligns with the broader AEWV reforms and reflects similar regulations under the previous Essential Skills Work Visa.
Who is NOT affected by this change?
Existing visa holders (partners and dependents). If your partner or dependent child already holds a visa to be in New Zealand with you, this change won't affect their current visa status.
AEWV holders (ANZSCO levels 4 & 5) with a residency pathway (e.g., Green List, sector agreements). If your ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5 occupation is on the Green List or has a sector agreement with a residency pathway, you can still sponsor your partner and dependent child visa applications.
AEWV holders earning at least 1.5 times the median wage for the Skilled Migrant Category. There is no change for AEWV holders whose salary meets this threshold.
Applications for partners and dependents already in progress. Applications submitted before June 26, 2024, will be assessed based on the requirements in place at the time of application.
