Important Immigration Updates: Skilled Residence and Work Visa Changes

Recent updates from Immigration New Zealand (INZ) have brought significant changes to skilled residence applications and work visa policies. Here's what you need to know:

Skilled Residence Applications

  1. Real-Time Processing: INZ has moved to a real-time allocation system for skilled residence applications, eliminating the lengthy queues of the past.

  2. Faster Processing Times: Straightforward, complete applications that don't require external third-party checks can now be decided within 6-8 weeks of lodgment.

  3. Accredited Employer Requirement: To be approved for a residence visa under any skilled residence category, the current skilled job or job offer must be with an accredited employer. This accreditation must be in place either at the time of application or before a decision is made.

New Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

  • Work experience is calculated as of the application date.

  • Full registration is required for points allocation unless otherwise specified.

  • Work experience is only counted after full registration (if required).

  • Employer accreditation and its validity must be verified.

  • IRD statements must cover the entire duration of claimed work experience.

Work to Residence (WTR)

  • Work experience is calculated as of the application date.

  • Only work experience obtained on an eligible work visa is counted.

  • Provisional registration is generally acceptable.

  • Employer accreditation and its validity must be verified.

  • Upfront evidence of work experience is required.

Straight to Residence

  • Job descriptions, while not mandatory, are helpful for assessment.

  • Provisional registration is generally acceptable.

  • Secondary School Teachers must meet and provide evidence of median wage requirements.

  • Offer letters used instead of employment agreements must include specific details.

  • Fixed-term employment must be for at least 12 months.

Partner Work Visa Policy

INZ is currently reviewing the work rights for partners, with updates expected soon. This review is particularly relevant given that ANZSCO skill levels 4 and 5 roles can no longer support partner work visas.

Application Completeness

INZ has shared data on incomplete applications across various categories:

  • Skilled Migrant Category: 47% of applications required additional information.

  • Straight to Residence: 61% of applications were incomplete.

  • Work to Residence: 68% of applications needed further information.

These figures underscore the importance of submitting thorough and well-prepared applications to avoid delays.
