Changes To The Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa And Accredited Employer Work Visa
Coming to New Zealand? The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa is getting a makeover!
From October 9th, 2023, a new points system will make it easier for skilled migrants to gain residency. This system offers clear pathways for temporary and permanent residency based on qualifications, wages, and work experience.
Key changes:
Points-based system: Applicants need 6 points to apply, earned through:
New Zealand work experience (max 3 points)
Recognised qualifications or registration (3-6 points)
Minimum wage requirement: Jobs offered must meet the median wage for lower skill levels (ANZSCO 1-3) or 1.5 times the median wage for higher skill levels (ANZSCO 4-5).
Faster processing: Straightforward applications with complete information aim for a 6-8 week decision.
Highly Paid Residence Visa integrated: This visa category will now be part of the SMC.
No change to:
Age limit
English language requirements
Health and character requirements
This new SMC system offers more certainty for migrants and employers. Visit the Immigration New Zealand website for more details on the Skilled Migrant Category and other residence pathways.
